Chesar 2020 Old Vine Areni Aghavnadzor Armenia
Chesar produces one wine; a single-vineyard Areni that expresses the terroir of its 45 year old vines. Established in the 1980s, this vineyard in Aghavnadzor is south-facing, which helps ensure perfect grape ripening. All pruning and harvest operations are performed manually.
The vineyard is irrigated twice per year, with traditional furrow irrigation. Post fermentation the wine is aged in 2nd use barrels for 6 months, and undergoes light filtration. The result is an elegant, refined take on Vayots Dzor Areni from an organically managed vineyard; low-intervention winemaking has yielded a transparent wine light on its feet but full of flavor.
- Producer: Artem Parseghyan
- Appellation: Aghavnadzor, Vayots Dzor
- Soil: Rocky with limestone and clay
- Elevation: 4200 feet
- Varietal: 100% Areni
- Fermentation: Stainless Steel
- Aging: Six months in used Artsakh barrels
- Age of the vines: 45 years
The wine, named in honor of Prince Chesar, the esteemed 13th-century ruler of Vayots Dzor, carries his legacy with pride. The label features the noble eagle from the royal coat of arms, alongside the striking miniatures of Momik, a renowned artist, architect, and sculptor from the same period.
Prince Chesar, known as the “prince of princes,” was both wise and powerful. He constructed several caravanserais (similar to hotels), including the Selim Caravanserai, and played a key role in the establishment of churches, schools, and educational centers. He also helped develop trade with foreign nations in the Vayots Dzor region. Currently, archaeologists are working to excavate and restore the prince’s residence, which, in a few months, will be open to the public as a museum.
